Omiwa Shrine, also known as Miwa Shrine, is located in Sakurai, Nara Prefecture. It is unique because it has no sacred images or objects, venerating Mount Miwa itself. The shrine features a worship hall but no housing for a deity, reflecting early Shinto shrine designs. As one of Japan’s oldest shrines, it has been a site for ancient religious practices and is often called Japan’s first shrine. It also serves as a guardian shrine for Japanese sake brewers.
